President and Vice President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Mehriban Aliyeva signed an obituary in connection with the death of Archbishop of the Baku and Azerbaijan Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Alexander Ishchein.
The Orthodox Christian community of Azerbaijan suffered a heavy loss. On June 10, 2021, at the age of 69, a well-known religious figure, Archbishop of the Baku and Azerbaijan Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, Alexander Gennadievich Ishchein, died."
“Archbishop Alexander, with all his heart attached to Azerbaijan and considered it his second homeland, took a direct part in the social and religious and spiritual life of our country, made a significant contribution to further strengthening the atmosphere of interreligious and interethnic friendship, brotherhood and trust, the development of interfaith harmony in society and ethnoreligious tolerance”.
The fruitful activity of Archbishop Alexander as a religious figure was highly appreciated. In 2002, he was awarded the Shohrat Order, in 2012 - the Dostlug Order, and in 2015 - the Honorary Diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The bright memory of Alexander Gennadievich Ishchein, a well-known religious figure, a kind and sympathetic person, will forever remain in the memory of everyone who knew him. May he rest in peace", reads the obituary, which was signed by the head of the government and parliament, as well as the leaders of the country's religious communities.
