Church,1772. National Museum of Village “Dimitrie Gusti” in Bucharest, Romania

Dragomireşti, Maramureş. Church, 1772.

The church ,with an imposing  spire  going up to 35 m height,  brought  to the museum in 1936 from Dragomireşti village, was built  in 1722 by replacing another, burnt down  by the Tartars on their plundering  raids in 1717.
Though a massive  building , the peasant craftsmen-native architects -succeeded in lending it a supple and slender form by interrupting the roof both vertically and lenghwise. The organization of the space inside is typical for Romanian churches the narthex for women ,the nave for men and the altar for the priests. The inside walls are painted  by folk artists ; the painting of the altar and nave observes the church canon, unlike  the one in  the narthex where the imagination of the pleasant painter was used freely  to mirror folk beliefs and superstitions of that time ( happiness in heaven and tortures in hell).
